Since I posted the comments on recording on VCRs I've found that a lot of people
do this with CDs since you can get 6hrs of recording on a tape and the quality
at the low speeds is still extremely good.

I asked a friend who uses video professionally and learned some more interesting
things:

According to my friend (he will check the specs this weekend) VHS HiFi is better
than 8mm. Also the tape doesn't degrade as quickly as 8mm when editing or
under repeated use.

8mm does have a format that allows the recording of PCM (digital, sort of)
audio. This is not as good as DAT but better than VHS HiFi. He recommends
sticking to the VHS HiFi tape.

I have a lot more details and will be getting some more on the specs. If
anyone is interested let me now I'll send them off-line.
