Jon,
Why do you need a camcorder? My friend uses his VHS recorder all
the time (sound is supposed to be almost as good as a DAT because the
tape is much wider that a normal cassette player) to record
concerts. The only problem is you cannot edit. Just hook up your
microphones to the machine. Or else send them thru a cheap mixer like
the ones Radio Shack sells and then into the machine. That's essentially
what he does. Good luck.
