Syd, thank you for that posting. It reminded me that a while back,
some guy who specializes in the Broadway musical told me that the
original book to most of the shows in which Ethel Merman sang always
had a big basset horn part, because Ethel thought that the sound of
that instrument blended very well with her voice.

Also, regarding the scoring of West Side Story, there must be more than
one scoring of that work because when I played it we have 5 (!!) bass
clarinets playing "A Boy Like That" simultaneously.
