As far as new instruments go, both Leblanc and Buffet will themselves decide
whether to replace or repair the tenon, in consultation with the dealer from
whom you bought the instrument. Recently one of my students had a new (less
than one year old) instrument crack, and Buffet replaced the tenon. Although I
was ambivalent about getting a mismatched tenon, the dealer was willing to hold
the old cracked tenon, wait until I gave my approval of the replacement tenon,
or if I decided the old tenon should rather be pinned. (Please never band your
instrument!) In general the companys and their representatives are willing to
please. Unfortunately, one cannot depend on the thought that an older instrument
won't crack. They do.
In a related direction, I'm curious whether the new -Green- Buffet will truly
never crack. Among all the other things to evaluate about this product, this
will be a small matter. We've got one here at Ithaca College that we're going
to blow in the upcoming days. We'll see.
