Surely the only way of determining once and for all whether there is a real
difference would be to hear the same player play on both systems. Who would
undertake this project just to please list subscribers, though?

Re: Jonathan C. on attack:
(1) One can often actually hear the high partials in a string player's attack -
some players seem to be able to control this, though it may just be that the
numerous modes of attacking a string with a bow have diverse acoustic results.
(2) (Not really on attack) Surely the mouthpiece-plus-reed as a system affects
the continuous harmonic spectrum of the sound? I'm pretty sure I make a
different (though probably never good!) sound according to whether I use a Hit
or Buffet or VanDoren mouthpiece, and whthher I use a Mitchell Lurie Premium or
a
VanDoren V12 reed.
