A few years ago in Foothill College Wind Ensemble, we played a set of
variations on Paganini's famous theme (forgive me, but it was either
by Malcolm Arnold or John Barnes Chance, I think. I get them mixed up).
Anyway, there was a solo in one of the variations for Eb Contra-alto
clarinet that I got to play. After messing around with it for a while,
I decided to try it with some vibrato. Much like when I play classical
saxophone, I usually started the tone straight, with moderate oscilations
getting faster as the note gets longer. The director liked it, so I left
it in. To this day, I still wonder what the stuffy first Bb clarinets
thought of that...
