I feel it it especially important not to use vibrato in orchestra
settings. When the clarinet is heard with other woodwinds, it functions to
give body, presence, and above all, a center to the woodwind section. As
orchestra clarinetists, we all must work a bit harder than other winds to
make sure ourmake sure our timbre is represented when the flute, oboe, and
bassoon are

e in many woodwind passages. In regards to playing in unison with a
flute, an in-tune partnership where the clarinet uses a full bodied straight
tone is beautiful to may ears. Without a well-projected clarinet, the flute
will easily over-balance the clarinet, which in my opinion, happens all too
often in orchestra.
Perhaps the opposite type of playing is necessary when playing
clarinet quintets. Any slight wisper form the clarinet is easily heard
against four string players because of the roundness of our tone. Here we
