More on substance
Now that we all have a warm fuzzy thinking that truth and beauty are
inextricably intertwined, I'd like to point out that the two may actually be
mutually exclusive - you can have one without the other. Dan is correct in the
sense that it is both his right and privilege to ask for more detailed
information relative to a given posting, and that anybody else has a right to
make a statement and leave it at that. There's no argument there. I just
happen to think that if somebody has posted a statement and chosen not to
elaborate, then that was all they felt like saying at the time and (s)e has no
desire to be subsequently told that his/her posting lacked "substance". I was
getting the impression, especially from Dan's prior higly verbose "post-game
analysis" concerning the multiple exchanges on the topic of the three British
clarinetists, that some sort of precedent was in the process of being
established relative to the manner in which people could express themselves on
the forum. Further comments concerning people's postings seemed to solidify
this impression. Sometimes we express ourselves in our daily lives, only to
have those feelings objectified and analyzed by people around us, to the point
where we're being told that we must have a reason for what we feel, rather than
simply having those feelings exist solely on their own terms with no further
need for comment or justification. I would prefer that this aspect of human
nature not be carried over into this forum. I gain equal gratification and
enrichment from reading material on this forum of less intense or intricate
nature, where a broader balance is reached and I feel I can make a statement at
either end of the spectrum: from highly academic to seemingly rhetorical and
inconsequential. Again, I don't feel that this in any way diminishes or
dilutes the level of discourse which typically occurs. As long as we stay on
the subject of clarinets in a general sense, I think all postings should be
welcome and allowed to be made WITHOUT subsequent comments regarding how
erudite they may or may not be.
