Subj: about this vibrato thing...

Before this discussion gets too far into personal opinions about the use of
vibrato, I want to make sure my question is clear. I didn't really ask
whether any of you think I (or anyone else) should use vibrato, and I didn't
ask this for the same reason I never asked you all what kind of reeds you use.
I'm sure the opinions on both topics are interesting and varied, but I alrady
have a very strong personal opinion about both topics, and it is unlikely that
you will convince me of much.

The point I was trying to make is that there are many clarinetists who DO use
vibrato, and I think they use it without the develpment and knowledge that
other instrumentalists seem to have. It could be that this is because vibrato
has a different function in clarinet playing than in singing or flute playing.
It seems to be mostly a color, rather than an essential part of the sound,
something Fred pointed out in his comments.
