I am looking for the Julius Rietz clarinet concerto in g-minor, but
have been told by Eble Music in Iowa that it has been out of print for 25
years. For those clarinetists who have never heard of this concerto, it is
recorded by Thea King and the English Chamber Orchestra. If you are looking
for an intense, Un-Weberish mid-romantic concerto, then you will like that
CD. According to the liner notes, Rietz was a collegue of Mendelsshon, who
described his conducting as "outstandingly good, diligent, precise, and very
skillful." There is even a comparison between the Rietz concerto and
Mendelssohn's violin concerto because in both there is no orchestral
exposition and the movements are connected.
Anyway, I would like to find out where I can find this concerto so I
can enter it in a concerto competition. After hearing this piece, I feel it
is terrible that clarinetists would let it fall into oblivion.
