I inadvertently turned from a lurker into a contributor a day or
so ago when I sent a message about Albert- and Oehler-system
clarinets off, thinking it was going only to someone in the
Netherlands. Luckily at least one person said that what I posted
wasn't complete nonsense!

My lurking has been based partly on my not being a clarinet
player, but I have a great love of clarinets, and also a long
association with them through my late husband, Arthur H. Benade,
who not only played well but did significant acoustical research
on the instrument.

Art, whom many recognized as an 'expert,' had some wise words
(IMO) that seem to apply to the current discussion about whether
clarinets die young or just keep on playing. He said that in
questions of this sort, you should consult the evidence of your
own God-given ears and believe them, rather than blythely
accepting the words of experts.

(Art had a small but varied collection of clarinets, most of
which he really liked, and all of them were far older than ten
years.)
