My Posting on the 3 Queens
I must say how delighted I am that my comments on the three players in question
sparked such a flashy dialogue between so many members of the list. I merely
endeavored to express my opinion, and it was not anywhere on my mind that my
statement should be the catalyst of another Stoltzman/Shifrin-type debate. I
can understand the exasperation of certain readers that this sort of discussion
has arisen again, but I question the idea that it serves no purpose or is not
worthy of posting. The Klarinet forum is invaluable as a resource for a very
high level of discourse on subjects relevant to so many players of the
instrument, but I don't feel that this appreciable level of sophistication
precludes the list from also being a forum for exchange on lighter subjects,
which may hold an equal amount of interest to certain readers as discussions
concerning multiphonics, bore dimensions, historical data on the instrument and
players, and the turning of wooden bells for bass clarinets. Much like one
reader in L.A. commented recently, reading the cross-fire about the 3 queens is
nice light fodder for him in contrast to the barage of media coverage on the
O.J. Simpson case. The same may apply relative to the List, for sometimes
there are discussions on such heady subjects for such an extended period of
time that people may grow weary and stop reading or contributing for a lack of
balance in the weight of material being discussed. I have certainly felt this
at times, and I suspect I am not alone. A simple exchange of opinions can, as
I've experienced with the responses to my posting, be a lot of fun. I happen
to be revelling in the fact that most of the responses have coincidentally come
out in agreement with the feeling I put forward - but I think I am enjoying
most that such a lively exchange between members has arisen at all. Regardless
of the subject, I feel that animated discourse is the whole idea of the forum
and, therefore, I feel that my posting has contributed to this unspoken mission
and possesses merit on that basis alone. Keeping talking and arguing,
everybody. It's great!
Neil.
