While we are on the (controversial) subject of British clarinettists,
I would like to recommend a former teacher of mine, John McCaw
(also known as Jack). As far as I know, he only made one recording
on LP sometime in the 70's of the Nielsen and Mozart concertos.
He has a warm, lyrical tone, and truly makes the clarinet "sing".
His Nielsen is not only technically flawless, but the most musical
interpretation I have ever heard. Many performances of this work
dazzle the listener with virtuosity, but disappoint on the artistic side.
Does anyone with access to info. on recordings know if this recording
was ever re-released on CD, or even if the LP is still available?
I have only seen it (and heard it) in libraries. Thanks,

Lisa Gartrell Yeo

PS Those of you who are unafraid to make thoughtless and insulting comments
about your British colleagues, have you ever stopped to think that they
may be subscribers to this list? Criticism is healthy, but some
remarks have been vitriolic, and can only be seen as personla attacka
rather than objective criticism. (sorry 'bout the typos). Once again,
I urge
subscribers to be a little more considerate of their fellow clarinetists.
