I feel that all new instruments should be checked out by a repairman,
whether mail order or not. Some experience:

- I got a Vito alto clarinet. It seems that the Leblanc company does not
glue the pads down in these when they ship them, so many of them slip.
My repairman spent a day on it and it plays great now.

- My wife got a Holton Tuckwell French horn. The second valve on the Bb
side was a little warped, and the repairman noticed it and fixed it.

- I got a Selmer Mark VII tenor sax in high school. The low C# and the
F natural screws had both worked loose.

The factory deliberately leaves things a little loose because things
can seize up when they ship the instruments to the stores. So you
should always have your favorite repairman go over any instrument
you aquire. With new horns, it won't take very long and will be inexpensive.
With used horns, ...
