This is a comment on Mrs. Benade's recent posting regarding the terminologies
"Albert" and "Oehler." I definitely agree with her when she states that
"Albert" refers to older instruments. I have always understood "Albert system"
to indicate the (approximately) 13-key system with the forked b'b and f'' (and
d''') fingerings and "Oehler system" to mean the modern German/Austrian system
with the same forked fingerings but considerably more keys. The "Albert system"
is the one that Baermann and so many others wrote methods for, and Klose
includes some exercises in Part I of his _Celebrated_Method_ to aid the player
in converting over from the "13-key clarinet" to the Boehm system.

Is this the nomenclature many of you have learned as well?

David Gilman
