Whatever more is said about these British clarinettists, I think we should be
clear when we are discussing matters of taste and when the issue is actual
playing ability. From what I've heard of Ms Thompson, her recordings are brisk
and superficial, and have some altissimo notes which are noticeably out of
tune. One might think that the recording engineer should have done something
about that. I can't go along with any of the bad things about Thea King, who
seems to be in a higher league altogether. Personally, I don't go for Jack
Brymer's "fat" tone, and I don't like the way he plays the Hindemith sonata,
but this is purely a matter of taste. I'm looking forward to what Prof. Monsen
has to say.
