Pads are usually held in place by pad shellac. It softens when heated so
that the pad can be shifted to create a tight seal and then hardens to hold
the pad in place as soon as it cools. When a pad comes loose there is
usually enough of the adhesive left on the pad and in the pad cup that
putting the pad in place and heating the back of the cup will reattach the
pad. Be careful not to burn the pad or excessively heat the cup so as to
discolor the lacquer on the instrument. Most music stores also sell a pad
cement that takes longer to cure.
