Regarding your question regarding Mahler and his choice of bass clarinet in
A-
I heard several (unconfirmed) stories Mahler may have scored this to
accomodate a bass clarinet friend who owned one in A, and I supposed wanted
to get some playing time with it.

Of course, that doesn't explain, as you mentioned in a previous article, why
he scored the 4th movement solo in his fourth symphony with a B-flat bass,
with the key in concert E major.
