I don't remember what the parts say (yes, I have really played it), but the
Philharmonia score of Mahler 4 has "Schalltrichter auf!" in sundry places -
e.g., bar 195 in movement 3 and bar 41 in movement 4. As these instructions go
with ff dynamics, there is a terrible risk of playing blaringly and flat ...
Personally, too, if I try to play this way, my hands fall away from the keys,
producing squeaks and bumps.
