A couple of insights--

With Mahler constantly revising there are numerous earlier parts
available to his symphonies. I have seen and been told that the last
edition and most up to date ones are the parts which are available from
European American on rental only. For example the opening of Mahler 1,
takes the notes from clarinet 2 and gives them to the bass clarinet (in
the "fanfare" like theme) in the rental part. The scores published by
Universal are quite expensive, but match the rental parts; whereas the
Dover scores aren't accurate in this case. The Kalmus/Luck's parts are
close for the most part.

Regarding the fourth clarinet part (in E-flat), there are actually two
notes at the end of the third movement which are for b-flat clarinet.
Actual notes are like a bottom line E down a fourth to a B. . .if memory
serves me correctly. So my question is, do you go for the doubling fee
on this one, or simply give it to the Bass/clarinet 3 player? And then
do they play it in B-flat or on Bass, since a bass clarinet solo is just
around the bend? So much for Mahler specifying clarinets by their sound.
. .I just don't know if I buy that one [Dan] in this case.

BTW, my observations are based on using the rental parts which I was told
were the final Mahler edition. Is this not correct?
