Josh Rubin asked about bells-up playing in Mahler

>For those who are experienced Mahler musicians, how high do

>the raised bells in the fifth symphony?

You should lift the bell up over the stand so that it is pointing straight
out to the audience.

The effect is to make the sound more piercing, bright and forceful. It
tends to have somewhat of a nasty sound too. Have fun!
