Subj: Interesting concert
Date: Mon, 9 Jan 1995 12:02:04 -0500

I played an interesting concert this last weekend and thought I'd mention
why it was interesting.

The program consisted of 5 contemporary American compositions and each
one had a bass clarinet part.

They were:

1) Copland: Lincoln Portrait
2) Louis Ballard: Scenes from Indian Life
(Ballard is a Navaho Indian)
3) Chinary Ung: Grand Spiral
(Ung is Cambodian)
4) Rodriguez: Tango
(Rodriguez is a Hispanic/American)
4) Bernstein: Age of Anxiety symphony

It was the range of music that was most interesting. Each of the composers
had essentially the same resources at their disposal (namely a symphony
orchestra of European traditions) and each one used it to create music
of their own cultural perspective (though Copland and Bernstein's
cultural assimilation into America was well accomplished by their
parents and not themselves as was the case with Ballard, Ung, and
Rodriguez).

For those of you who have never played a work of Ung (not that I am
any specialist, by any means), he is very difficult to play!!
