Neil,
According to the Jazz History courses I've taken, you're right on
both counts. Diz and Bird (Parker) are supposed to have pretty much
"invented" bebop but certainly Coltrane was, if not an inventor, than at
least in on the ground floor, so to speak. He certainly was one of the
pioneers in the (then) new style.
