Christopher,
Bob Mintzer is a great jazz bass clarinet player. He leads a big band in New
York and occasionally will play it. The slow ballad you were talking about
was Herbie Hancock's Maiden Voyage. It was on the GRP All star big bands
first album. Assuming you have the recording, have you listened to track 3,
Donna Lee? Nelson Rangell plays picc, Gary Burton on vibes and Eddie Daniels
on clarinet. It's a sweet arrangement.

Eric Dolphy did a lot of great bass playing. His album Out to Lunch is a
standard part of any jazz listening library. His chops on flute, sax, and
bass clarinet are incredible. He played a lot of bass after Coltrane died
and he was on his own.

Don Byron is another great player. He has two albums out, Tuskegee
Experiments is the one I have, his other one is mostly klezmer and is a
tribute to Mickey Katz.

Some other great bass players, they may not have readily (sp?) available
recordings: Anthony Braxton, Tom Scott, Eddie Daniels, Ernie Watts, and Buddy
deFranco.
