I was under the impression that chromatic passage trade off which David
N. spoke of is on different clarinets because the second clarinet goes
down to a low E (on the A clarinet) in a passage earlier in the piece
(movement??), which isn't possible on b-flat clarinet.

Although it defeats the purpose of passing the line between clarinets, I
was told to "practice" the entire passage on B-flat clarinet. Then when
performing it, to have the second clarinet player transpose their part so
both clarinets are on the same instrument (unlike the part and Shost.
have indicated).

But then again, I am not playing up in Detroit. . .
