I thank Jeremy Krider and the person whose message he quoted for
making those complimentary remarks about Paul Meyer. As I mentioned in
two or three of my previous postings, Paul Meyer is near the top of my
list of favorite classical clarinetists. About a year ago, I played a
chamber-music recital in Santa Barbara at which the Poulenc and Saint
Saens Sonatas were included. In preparing for the program, I listened
to the Meyer CD, which contained both works. They were both superbly
played, and I will confess to having been influenced by his
interpretations.

Another player I have mentioned in the past, whom I regard at
least as highly as Meyer, but who has not been mentioned elsewhere on
this forum, is Maurice Gabai. For those of you who have not yet heard
it, his recording of the Francaix clarinet concerto (which was
originally issued on a French LP label) is the most electrifying performance
of an extended classical clarinet work I have ever heard. His recording
of the cadenza in the fourth movement of the Francaix clarinet quintet
runs the concerto recording a close second.
