Is anything? What prompted me to voice my opinions about Stolzman's jazz
performance was (first) a posting that criticized his classical
performance and (next) my perception (and one that seemed implicit in the
posting I had just read) that there was general critical agreement that
S. is a successful jazz player. After reading all of the subsequent
postings here, it seems I was breaking down an open door (as the French
say). The consensus from this list seems to be that it's really fine for
him to be playing jazz, but we should not confuse him with performers who
have better internalized the language. What we all seem to be doing here
is trying to find out what we all think, a good step towards thinking
better, maybe even hearing better. I know that I've learned a lot from
this discussion (a good measure, perhaps, of my ignorance!), and I hope
that such expressions of opinion continue, as long as they are made
