I think that Lee Callet has put it well, I am afraid. S. is simply not a
jazz musician, instrument aside. I would, however, like to pick up
something you said. You mentioned Phil Woods in passing. I have had the
opportunity to listen to his clarinet playing quite a bit lately, and I
would venture that he is one of the greatest bebop players on the
instrument. He studied it extensively years ago and doubled on it when
he was working in the studios, but then neglected it for a while. More
recently he has been playing it more and more and he is very impressive.
One of his best albums is a set of duets with his piano player, entitled
Flowers for Hodges, where he even tackles the bass clarinet.
