Well, I wasn't there, but the New York Times was and they reported it.
People who were there told me that he played the Brahms Quintet, went
backstage and, in the second half of the concert came into the Grace
Rainey Rogers auditorium from the back and, with his clarinet like
a drum major's baton, came down the stairs in a state of total
nudiosity!! He lost the Casals festival because of that and had a
difficult time getting regualar orchestral work too. But he played so
very well that people got over it. And so did he.

But it is true to the best of my knowledge!
