I would like to add a few comments to the discussion of R.L. Stoltzman. As a
graduate student, he was an excellent classical clarinetist whose sound and
style were typical of the best American clarinetists of that time. There were
very few clarinetists in the world who made their living mainly as soloists.
I'm thinking of Cahuzac, Kell, and perhaps Brymer and DePeyer. Kell, of
course, was thought by many to be eccentric in his style and use of constant
vibrato. There were several wonderful American and European orchestral
clarinetists who played recitals and made solo recordings, but to my knowledge,
most were not exclusively or even mainly, soloists. If Mr. Stoltzman had not
set himself apart from the mainstream in some ways, we might not be talking
about him today.
