I would not want to go on for too long about this, but it does appear
that Stolzman, whatever his talents and technical abilities, has diluted
his art quite a bit. In the jazz world he is certainly not taken more
seriously than other "classical" musicians who play at jazz, and he has
not added anything to the history of the jazz clarinet. From comments on
this list it appears that his classical interpretations are hardly seen
as definitive. This is a sorry example of what marketing does to good
musicians. I would also hesitate to compare him to musical chewing gum
such as KG or the absolutely abominable Yanni. They indeed should be
objects of scorn. The very idea that the reason one avoided elevators
and dentist offices is now marketed as "music" is a sad commentary on the
way in which the "industry" has manipulated our culture. Stolzman may e
no genious, but I would put him a bit above that lot!
