I think that Elaine's comments on Stolzman were most interesting, and she
should in no way be ashamed of having real opinions. I would add that as
a jazz afficionado, I have absolutely no interest in S's jazz playing.
It is very much in the "crossover" department; one can admire his
technique, but he is simply not a real jazz player the way Don Byron,
ANthony Braxton, John Carter, or Johny Dodds are or were. he plays at
playing jazz, but he does not really feel it, his pulse is wrong and his
tone is not convincing. I never thought of him as a jazz clarinetist
until I had to write this!
