Yes, Roger, I did use the same mouthpiece and reed. Just for clarification,
in the case I mentioned, the R-13 played fine and the Prestige gave me
problems. But, about a year ago I tried a different set of instruments
including a Prestige and several R-13's and it was the Prestige that was
easier to play. My point is that in my experience, there is as
much variation between individual instruments of a particular model as
across models, especially between R-13's and Presige's! Given that a
clarinet is made of wood, not some epoxy polymer and much of the work is
still done by hand, although aided by various jigs and machines, it seems
reasonable to expect individual variation. This is also why I don't place
great trust in the testimonials of famous artists who endorse a particular
instrument. Now, if Leblanc or Buffet or Selmer or Yamaha should offer to
specially select the best instrument of the hundreds that come off their
line over a given period of time and maintain it on a regular basis for me
and also pay a fee for using my name I'd probably be happy to use any
make or model they selected. But, before that time comes I must practice,
practice, practice!
