Dan brought this project idea to me several years ago and at that time I
was not really ready or willing to do it. I guess as I get older the
weird things intrigue me more.

As Dan stated, the problem is not fitting the bell socket and bow to the
bass - we now have the existing parts. Turning the bell will present the
biggest problem. I am working with Daniel Dietsch who is a maker of
baroque flutes here in SF. I spoke to Dan a few days ago and he has
already turned a small protoype. He has figured out a way to turn the
piece to approximate the bell curve. I think that a straight bell would
be just as suitable. As far as tuning is concerned I believe that the
only tone that would be affected is the low C. We will probably use
maple. To get a piece large enough to make the bell we will have to glue
two pieces together.

I think the whole thing is possible it's just a matter of how much it
will cost.
