Dan,

I'll try to answer some of your concerns:

Attaching the wooden bell to the metal crook seems to me to be the easy
part. An arrangement similar to the middle socket ring (with the screw)
that Yamaha uses on their low C Bass could be used. This will allow some
adjustment when the wood shrinks. The hard part is the curved wooden
bell. I'm glad Clarke knows a woodworker.

Maple will probably be the cheapest and most available wood to use to
make the bell.

Clarke is right, there shouldn't be much of a problem fitting the crook
to your bass.

The peg doesn't have to attach to the bell, it can attach to the body
of the instrument.

As far a being "cost effective"...cost is relative. The major expense
that I see is the turning of the wooden bell.

The tuning also shouldn't be a big problem as long as bell diameter,
length, etc. are taken into consideration.
