I was just re-reading Willaman on trimming reeds. In his opinion, the burning
method leaves a "ragged. saw-toothed edge that is likely to leak air" due to
the faster burning of the organic material between the threads of mineral
fiber. He suggests using scissors and as a pattern, a piece of tin can cut to
the shape of the mouthpiece curve. He says that an alto sax clipper might be
preferable to a clarinet clipper because the reed edges will be spared too much
curve.
