I have also heard of people going to "hand-pick" reeds at Vandoren.
My old teacher, David Samour of Boston, explained to me that he would go
annually to try out several hundred reeds, keeping those that he
preferred. I also remember him saying something, but I am not positive,
that would seem to support the idea that Vandoren does not limit which
reeds can be "tested." Thus, the only reeds to be shipped are the ones
that weren't taken at the factory after having been tried.
Just thought I would add my two cents!
