Michelle,

The reeds that are shipped to us here in the United States are
most probably not as good of quality as there are in Europe, especially
when it comes to Vandoren and Glotin reeds. If you have the
means to get to the reed factory, you are welcome to play test
as many reeds as you like in any given strength. Once you've
playtested hundreds of reeds, you're only required to purchase
the ones that you like. I have a feeling that the reeds that
we get here in the United States are the ones that are left over.

If you want good quality reeds, the best thing is to make them
yourself, but not many people have that kind of time. As far as
the commercial reeds go, I've had limited success with a few brands.

I'd look at the Marcas. They require a lot of work but those
reeds play well. The Rico quarter size Grand Concert Reeds also
play well and are balanced quite well. The Rico prototype reed
that was under development by Marcus Eley (now being marketed
as the quarter strength reed) was exceptional. I was especially
happy with the #31 and #32.

Best of luck to you Michelle!
