Discussing practising scales with a good/lousy reed:

I agree with you on this point. I know when I run through my work in
the Baermann, if my reed isn't performing well, the practise is useless.
I find that when I'm working on articulations, it's nice to have a reed
that will let you do this well. If I were to take out the old reeds
for practising these exercises, I don't think I'd ever improve. But I
would get VERY frustrated when I'm trying to do something and the reed
is making it difficult. - I know that it's not me, because I was able to
do better before, so I always try to use a reed that performs well. And
as long as it works well, I use it. When it stops doing what I want, the
n I get out another one, and alternate between the two until the new
one's broken in.
I think this is what you meant, and I think the same.
