Thanks William, you just articulated my very thoughts on the matter, and that
is the approach I take as well. The only problem these days is that a couple
of indeterminate factors continue to interfere with the noble intentions of
our system. First, these radical weather shifts that we've been experiencing
lately (here in San Francisco) have caused my reeds to metamorphose into
something completely different from what they were when I first began to
break them in. And they can instantly shift again with another weather
change. Secondly, the cane is very undependable, and a great reed can go
soft very quickly, even though it seemed pretty robust during the first week.
In both cases, no warning. It's getting more and more difficult to maintain
a positive outlook in these situations.
