Minidiscs use a lossy compression algortihm which means they they throw out
some data, thus requiring fewer bits overall. This is different than a
compression algortihm used in the archiving of data files such as PKZip. In
this case there can be no intentional errors in the data. The data thrown out
is based on some sort of algorithm that decides what information your ear can
do without and still provide reasonable fidelity. I believe that if you were to
make multigenerational copies (i.e. a copy of a copy of a copy....) the sound
would deteriorate very quickly with the minidisc. This is similar to making
multigenerational copies on a standard analog cassette. The digital compact
cassette works in a similar way. DAT and CDs record and store all the
information received, they should sound better. I believe the minidisc sounds
somewhat better than a standard cassette. The choice will probably depend more
on your listening than the technical description. Kinda like buying a clarinet.
