My statement advising one to "not oil" the horn before flying should be taken
in the context of the original posting which asked, among other things, if
one should oil one's clarinet before putting it in the cargo hold. My advice
was, and is, forget about doing anything (such as oiling the bore) to protect
it against being damaged in the cargo holdxinstead, carry it on the plane
with you.

As an aside, on a trip to Cologne, Germany in 1987, our tubist's horn was
inadvertantly sent on to Gratz, Austria; only to be located three days later.
We had a TV show to play upon arrival and, fortunately, Lufthansa rented a
pro-level tuba for us and picked up the bill. Had we been in a location more
removed from a major urban center, we would have been up the creek without a
paddle. Now, when we fly, our tubist gets clearance to be within observing
distance of the cargo area upon take-off and arrival. If he could carry his
horn onto the plane, he would.

Enjoy the friendly skiesx
