I also use the technique when in an emergency, but I modify the one
described. I put the reed between two quarters (or two half dollars,
but not between nickels because the circumference has to rapid a
curve) and burn off a little. The problem is that the coins get hot,
but they have to be held on the edge of a table (how else will you
get the flame underneath the edge of the coins) by other than your
fingers. You will be unable to hold two silver or composite coins too
long if you apply a match to them.

It is not the greatest technique I know, but it works.
