Since the problem with my tenor, I have followed the general rule of
carrying on my horns. Since I don't have anything larger than a
tenor, I've been able to get away it without booking a seat for an
instrument, but I would definitely do that if necessary. For very large
instruments, like a string base, there are special cases (if anyone's
interested I can find the name of a case-maker that a bass-player friend
employed for a trip to China) and special steps to prepare the instrument
for travel in the cargo area. Creativity can help: a friend who plays
banjo had a soft case designed that would hang like a garment bag in the
cabin of the plane.
