John-

Some instruments like a Sax or Bass Clarinet, may be too large to simply
"carry them on" the airline. When one of our Bassoon players found a good
deal on a ContraBassoon, she flew to the city where it was located, and had
to buy it a ticket for the return flight! The airline made out the ticket to
"Mr. Cello". They told her it was not unusual for musicians to travel this
way, with their large instruments.

I wonder where they draw the line? Maybe the larger instruments have to fly
first class.
