I fly approx. 100,000 mi/year with my clarinets. I never check them through
cargo and cannot understand why anyone would want to.

My advice, don't oil them...carry them on with you.

Under the best conditions, you still have to face the possibility of theft
and/or mis-routing. Why risk it?

Carry them on.
