Being a former band director and now an independent observer, I
have two viewpoints on listening. First, every young student (even
college age) needs to listen as much as possible. Young musicians
learn by inputing (listening to) as much information (music) as
possible. They, then, analyze, combine, and delete the data in order
to form our own identity, or style. We all are, in a sense, computers
with a soul. It is that human element that makes the difference!
Once our identities (or personal styles) have been established,
we can feel confident using this knowledge to interpret music in our
own style. ( I still believe it is important for everyone to listen.
If someone feels he/she has reached a point where they cannot learn
from others, they become stagnate and their skills diminish.)
(To Ron Monsen - Yes, I know Bill Schwab quite well. He is a
very fine teacher.)
Nice to see Ted Schoen on the board. I hope you are still
playing after the demise of the Florida Symphony.
