I tend to do this a few weeks, if I have the time, before a major
audition. Even a really horrible recording device will pick up
deviations in tempi, and poor intonation(you should be able hear that
more easily than feel the tempo change, however). I also agree with the
thought of "performing for an audience," it really makes you
concentrate, and tends to make regular practicing more beneficial.
