I tend to listen to a recording to get a sense of balance and
direction in the piece, but I do not feel "restricted" to an
interpretation exactly like the performers. I think that listening to
the piece can give you an idea about the work's more abstract qualities,
like direction, mood, etc., which is quite helpful, if all you see on
the page are words "describing" how it "may" be played. Just my $.02!
