Subj: Angle bass clarinet neck and Bill Helmers remarks

Bill, first welcome to the board. Second, I have been on this list for
well over a year now and yours is the first to give such an illuminating
insight into the matter of the angled neck. There has been nothing
remotely like it discussed earlier, and while I may have some reservations
about a few things that you said, I would very much like you to continue
in this vein. Further, I want to withhold my comments until I think
about some of the items about which you spoke.

The points which your brought up are just my style: objective and
rational. Please do continue. Yours is a welcome breath on the
board.

Let me add one final point. I had Charlie Bay make a second angled neck
for me for my A bass clarinet and it did not work. In principle the
entire neck of the A and B-flat b.c. are the same. I had them both
carefully measured. But there must be a difference I failed to measure
since the intonation went to hell in a handbasket the minute I put the
new angled neck into my A bass. So I play one instrument with an
angled neck and one with the traditional neck.
